2 days ago I decided to update windows. after doing the update I noticed that the files on my desktop were missing, so I decided to search for them in windows search. I found them and placed them on the desktop as they were before the update. Also, my wallpaper and several settings were changed. The next day after logging in, my wallpaper and settings went back to the state they were in before the update, but I noticed that my files are not on the desktop again, so I decided to look for them like i did yesterday. But this time, I couldn't find them anywhere. I started looking for help on the internet. I checked windows.old and users folder but ifound nothing. I decided to use disk drill to recover these files. I scanned the entire disk and found some of the deleted files, but after recovering, 95% of them were corupted and cannot even be opened. These files were really important to me. Please help.

I spent a lot of time with the Linux community and used some recovery tools but nothing worked. The Linux partition was truly erased but the Windows partition was okay and in fact I was able to finish the Windows upgrade and had my Windows data. Microsoft made a programming error and the upgrade was particularly evil towards old GPT/MBR type partitions. My motherboard doesnt support the newer UEFI systems.

I solved the problem by finding a 2nd hardrive in another computer and installing it in my system. Now Windows has a harddrive all it's own and I reinstalled Linux on it's own harddrive. I also have more room.

I need Linux for engineering apps.

Everything on the windows side was recoverable and in fact all the apps and programs worked after the upgrade. Everything on the Linux side was lost but this consisted of 1 application and a little data which I think was duplicated on a Linux laptop. The old Linux partition (except for Linux SWAP) was removed and not recoverable. I used a utility to format all the old Linux space to NTFS and merge it with the rest of the main partition.

I had very little room anyhow on the Linux (XUbuntu 20.04) partition and the 2 harddrive solution is better and gives each OS a lot more room. I installed a better (but still old) motherboard which could now support 16GB and found an old 1TB harddrive which I formatted completely EXT4 for Linux. The system works better than before.
