My Microsoft word app on my iPad has started to freeze in the last few hours. It freezes about ten seconds after startup and then doesn’t respond. I have since troubleshot this by updating the app, reinstalling it, updated my iOS, restarted my iPad, and contacted Apple support. They informed me that I need to contact the app developer (Microsoft). I need the app for my work so a speedy fix would be appreciated.

I also have this issue on my iPad, both Word and Excel freeze after opening documents stored on OneDrive. Started last couple of days.

Same thing has happened to me along with the loss of the find option. This is really surprising and needs a fix asap. I have re-installed app - signed in and out etc. On start up - hard freeze - then reboot then all over again. Has made the app un-usable. When will a bug update be released?

Same thing started happening to mine today. Came to work, and now I can’t use Word on my iPad. This, and also the find function stopped working after the last update. The Word app has been having tons of problems since March, at least, and nothing seems to be getting fixed. I just keep getting told to sign in and out of my account, which obviously doesn’t work, or report it to HQ who don’t seem to be doing anything.

Same thing is happening to me and I use this for work. Freezes about 5-10 seconds after opening a doc OR starting a new one. I’ve tried all the suggested troubleshooting. No change. Microsoft needs to fix this asap or I’m going back to google docs.
Exactly the same for me with the find option too, very frustrating when it is a very regular part of my use for work

Consider me yet another unsatisfied customer. Same problem. Same start time for the issue to have arisen.
Already have rebooted 4 times this morning. word worked for a minute and then upon opening another filed - failed. I will continue to update the reboot count to exhibit how disruptive this is to workflow

Try this temporary solution:
Disable wifi (or toggle on airplane mode) when it freezes and then enable it again.
After doing this the app works fine until I restart it (Excel application?) again.

I am also experiencing the same problem for the past two days now. I cannot seem to edit an existing Word document, I cannot print the document nor can I save convert it to pdf. I have contacted Apple and they have confirmed it is more than likely a complex bug that Microsoft need to resolve. The subscription is active and the latest iOS has been installed. I have carried out all the troubleshooting steps yet to no avail. Can this please be looked at as soon as possible?

Word, Excel and PowerPoint are all presenting problems on my iPad. They freeze, won’t open files, won’t save files and won’t allow edits. This is not every time - the apps work fine for a short while and then the problems start. I can’t identify any specific symptom as they are all variable. I have updated the iPad OS, deleted all the apps (including Onedrive) and re-installed them but to no avail. The only workaround is to select airport mode until you need to save a file and then turn off airport mode. Toggling Wi-Fi on and off sometimes frees up a non-functioning app. The issue has arisen only within the last few days.

In the 21st century with AI and all kinds of machine learning at their fingertips, it is shocking that MS cannot fix this issue - which seems to be a very common problem now.
It has literally rendered my word and office useless - and there is just no way to do any productive work with these two programs. I’ve tried all the suggestions mentioned here and more (such as doing a happy dog yoga pose and opening the file with the tip of my nose) - but nothing works.
The tragic thing is that they are literally the only options available to do the kind of work most professionals need to do - so, we’re stuck.
Unless, Open AI comes up with something useful. But, wait a minute, they’re part of the MS family as well - so, we’re stuck to complaining on such forums and hope that a miracle will get us back to doing our work.
PS: I’m going to try another approach now - which involves a combination of Capoeira, MMA, deep breathing and mind over matter to move digital data. Will let you guys know if it works. :)
BREAKING NEWS:
The applications work in offline mode. So, basically, get your iPad in airplane mode and the programs work perfectly fine. Edit and save a copy of the file and all will be fine. The edits and changes will be available in the “Saved as…” file.
Till things get fixed by MS - hopefully this helps.

You can simply just toggle your wifi off and on and MS programs will work fine until you close out of them and reopen program. Not a great fix but at least it works.

I found logging out of and signing back into the Word/Excel app has worked. I can’t work in offline mode as my files are automatically saving to Dropbox and I’d prefer not to change that setting.

Have been experiencing similar instances where Word app has continuously crashed, glitched when scrolling through documents, entire screen froze whilst trying to edit the documents, unable to edit or load documents, unable to save the documents nor access it from the homepage where saved documents should be visible and easily accessible.
It has been incredibly frustrating as I heavily depend on this app for work purposes!!! Microsoft Team, please do something about it, we’re paying subscription to use this and get work done swiftly. I thought I was the only one experiencing this!!!

Same issue here. The new Word 2.102.2 update released yesterday did absolutely nothing to fix this. Of note this is happening on both iOS 18 and iOS 26. I use one on my phone and the other on my iPad and the issue is identical on both.

Hi Elliot, thanks for letting me know about Word freezing on your iPad. Have you signed out and signed back into your Microsoft account in the app? Microsoft says you should keep the app updated, make sure your iPad’s iOS is supported, and be signed in properly. If it still freezes, use the Word app’s Help or Feedback option to report the issue to Microsoft directly. Does your Microsoft 365 subscription show as active right now?

That doesn’t work, excel doesn’t work either. Everything freezes after opening apps on iOS 26 latest update and only started happening today. Can not update any files as all the apps just freezes and I have to force shutdown the Microsoft apps

I am also having the same issue with my Word app on my iOS. The issue started Thursday the 16th. I have troubleshooted by checking its updates, I have uninstalled/reinstalled, I have signed out and signed back in, restarted the iPad several times— all these troubleshooting attempts have not successfully rectified the issue.
We're all having the same unfixable problem.

Signing out of my Microsoft Account and signing back in has fixed this issue for me, (thus far...).
Annnnnd... now it doesn't work again... really Microsoft? Paying for a service that doesn't work.

This is clearly a systemwide failure for all mobile devices, and it’s been happening the last few days for anyone who is trying to open or edit a cloud-based document. My iPhone and iPad are having the same issue these other users are reporting, and none of your suggested troubleshooting helps. Frankly, the situation for cloud-based document usage—particularly the app’s inability to resolve conflicts half the time with services like Dropbox—has been deteriorating for months now. Microsoft has switched to a subscription billing system, and is happy to keep charging us when it “updates” these apps by making them unusable. Please fix this now, or reimburse the users pro rata for the loss of the use of the product you are charging for. It’s only fair.
I'm 100% with Christopher. We're being charged for a service that isn't working. I'm self employed and I need Word to complete orders, which, I can't do - so it's now a real problem 4-5 days in. We're not even being contacted and updated. It's not good enough.
Really all that Microsoft needs to do is acknowledge the issue and at least confirm that there is a bug that they are working on fixing. Arlene?
just did the ‘bug fix’ update and did not do a thing - still freezing in word and excel.
Again when it freezes up go to settings and toggle wifi off and on (or hit airplane mode) and it will work until you close out of app. Not ideal but at least it’s a workaround until this is addressed by Microsoft.
Mine is suddenly working again. I guess they fixed the bug they wouldn’t admit was there.
