Windows 7 backup failure

I get error messages (see below) when attempting backup to external HD. How to cure? I'm guessing the I/O device cited is not the external drive since I am able to read files from this drive.

TIA for any assistance.

chkdsk ran on external drive. I did not get a prompt to check on restart.

I did get a check on restart on c: drive.

Attempted backup again and got same (original) message - "One of the backup files could not be created due to an I/O device error.

Start your Windows in Safe Mode. If this makes the problem go away and you are able to carry out your operation then it indicates that some third-party application may be interfering and causing the issue.

Restart your computer in http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows[***Clean Boot State***](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows "Perform Clean Boot in Windows") and try to identify the offending item, and then disable or remove it.

If the above didn't help, disable your antivirus software temporarily and see if it makes the problem go away. Some security software are known to cause these issues sometimes.

Let us know how that went.

Restarted in safe mode. I could not get backup to even start. It's the first option shown in the search box but clicking on it does nothing, as if I'm being ignored.

Restarted in normal mode. Temporarily disabled AV (ESET) and started backup. While watching progress meter I noticed the backup aborts a little more than half way through. AV was disabled for ten minutes. Trying again with AV disabled for one hour.

If the backup still fails, and you receive the 0x8007045D error at the very end of the backup process when it is around 99% complete, you can refer to this article and follow the advanced troubleshooting.

My error was not the one named xxx045D. The one time I happened to be watching the progress bar, the backup aborted at just slightly more than halfway through. Here's a shot of my error message.

After some more reading, I tried the backup with the system image files excluded. This effort (finally!) succeeded, albeit with yet another error.

The skipped files were revealed as :

I don't know what this means. I don't even know if it's important.

I did a search on the 80878002A error and it appears it is not uncommon. One fix offered is to run a third-party backup instead of using Microsoft's, Macrium was suggested.

I downloaded this and tried to set it up but it asks a lot of questions I don't know the answers to.

For now, just having the data files saved will do - that was my main goal in the first place.
