Account inactivity: If you don’t sign in for two years, your Microsoft account may be permanently deleted.
OneDrive subscription lapses: When your Microsoft 365 subscription expires, OneDrive enters stages:
First 30 days: Files remain accessible.
Next 60 days: Read-only mode (you can view/download but not upload).
After ~93 days: Archive mode files become inaccessible.
Beyond retention: If no license or billing is re-enabled within the retention window (often 1 year for consumer accounts), data is permanently deleted
Since you mentioned not using OneDrive for about a year, your account was likely moved to archive mode and then deletion if no retention or billing was applied.
What you can do now is:
Check if the Microsoft account still exists
Go to account.microsoft.com and try signing in.
If you can sign in, the account is active your OneDrive may just need reactivation.
Verify OneDrive status
Sign in at onedrive.live.com.
If you see an error or no files, the account may be archived or deleted.
Contact Microsoft Support immediately
If account is deleted
Unfortunately, if the account was inactive for 2 years and deleted, recovery isn’t possible. Microsoft permanently removes data after retention ends.
For future prevention
Enable regular sign-ins to keep the account active.
Consider third-party backup solutions for critical files.
Use OneDrive’s Restore feature or version history for accidental deletions.
