How to: Create an Explicit Hierarchy (Master Data Services)
In Master Data Services, create an explicit hierarchy when you need a ragged hierarchy in which members can exist at any level. Explicit hierarchies contain members from a single entity.
Prerequisites
To perform this procedure:
- You must have permission to access the System Administration and the Explorer functional areas.
- You must be a model administrator. For more information, see Administrators (Master Data Services).
- The entity must be enabled for explicit hierarchies and collections. For more information, see How to: Enable an Entity for Explicit Hierarchies and Collections (Master Data Services).
To create an explicit hierarchy
- In Master Data Manager, click System Administration.
- On the Model Explorer page, from the menu bar, point to Manage and click Entities.
- On the Entity Maintenance page, select the row for the entity that you want to create an explicit hierarchy for.
- Click Edit selected entity.
- On the Edit Entity page, in the Explicit hierarchies pane, click Add explicit hierarchy.
- On the Add Explicit Hierarchy page, in the Explicit hierarchies box, type a name for the hierarchy.
- Optionally, clear the Include all leaf members in mandatory hierarchy check box to create the hierarchy as a non-mandatory hierarchy.
- Click Save hierarchy.
- On the Edit Entity page, click Save entity.
- At the top of the Entity Maintenance page, click Home.
- On the Master Data Manager home page, from the Model list, select a model.
- From the Version list, select a version.
- Click Explorer.
- From the menu bar, point to Hierarchies and click **Hierarchy:**hierarchy_name. All members are displayed at the root or in an Unused folder.
- In the Entity pane, select the Consolidated option.
- Click Add member.
- On the Member Information page, in the Name field, type a name for the member.
- In the Code field, type a code for the member.
- Click Find parent node to select a hierarchy node to add the new member to.
- Click Save and go back.
- In the Explicit Hierarchy pane, drag a leaf or consolidated member to the consolidated member that you want to be a parent, or to the root. To move multiple members, select the check box for each member before dragging.
