After Installing Windows 11 Version 25H2 update, I get a black screen related to a network error.

My PC is fully up-to-date except for the Windows 11 Version 25H2 update. If I perform the update, I can't login but instead get a message along the lines of "Couldn't connect to the network Keep your device on, and we'll look for solutions again in: 2 hours

Click (or select Enter) for more recovery options. Log file: E:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

On this screen, I can't press enter for more recovery options. The only way for me to get out of this is to boot with Windows11 on USB, and perform a system restore. Right now, I've paused my updates, but I'd like to get this resolved so that I can continue getting updates in the future.

Also note that my windows drive is on C:\ not on E:. My E drive is empty, and doesn't contain the log file that is referenced.

    Hi Anthony Herrera,

Good Day. I hope everything's well. The message "Couldn't connect to the network....Log file: E:\WINDOWS\System32|Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt" means that the automatic setup repair feature was triggered, but it's directing to the wrong drive and cannot continue. Most common root causes for this is due to:
Incorrect drive mapping in the bootloader, Network stack or driver initialization failure, conflicting with device encryption like Bitlocker, corrupt or mismatched storage or chipset drivers, common issue in 25H2 builds where login fails if the PC is set to use a Microsoft Account and the network is unavailable during OOBE reprovisioning.

Let's try some few options and steps so you can install 25H2 without errors.

    1. Before we'll do the update again, ensure that your files and settings are backed-up or you can restore from your USB installer as you did first.
    2. Let's check and repair your BCD (Boot Configuration Data). Boot from your Windows 11 USB > Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt > Run the following syntaxes:
      bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /scanos bootrec /rebuildbcd
Incase the "bootrec/fixboot" says "Access is denied",
      Run:
      bcdboot C:\Windows /s C: /f UEFI
Adjust if your EFI / System partition is different > Confirm using "diskpart > list vol.
This will make sure that the BCD will direct your Windows main drive (C:)
    3. If you are using Microsoft Account to log-in, temporarily disable it and enable the built-in Administrator account before upgrading. From an elevated CMD (Command Prompt) run:
      net user administrator /active:yes
      Then set a password:
      net user administrator YourPasswordHere
Log in as Administrator, disconnect your network and retry the update. Let's try if we can avoid the "couldn't connect to the network" post-update login message.
    4. Before updating to 25H2, download and update your network adapter driver manually from the manufacturer's site. Open Device Manager > Network adapters > Right-click your Adapter > Uninstall device > Reinstall using the driver package you downloaded. This is to prevent Windows setup from installing an incompatible driver to your device during the update.
    5. Temporarily disable Bitlocker/device encryption (if existing).
    6. Try to run the setup manually while your network is disconnected. Instead of using Windows Update through internet, download the latest Windows 11 25H2 ISO in the Microsoft Download page. Mount the ISO and run setup.exe. Choose "Keep personal files and apps". Keep the PC offline during the install. After reboot, log-in locally (Administrator account) then reconnect the network.

If the upgrade succeeds, re-enable everything, MS account login, Bitlocker, reconnect the network, etc.

I hope this solves the issue.

    Regards,

    Jhun
