Can't access Minecraft account

I purchased Java Minecraft for $30 a few years ago and recently I updated my pc. When I went to log into Microsoft and Minecraft it said I needed to purchase it again. I have played on a pc before and my understanding is that my account should transfer from one pc to the next. What do I or you need to do in order to be able to play the Minecraft game that I purchased.
