Unable to resize a storage tier partition in a S2D after successfully expanding a storage pool

Hello,

We have a S2D two-way cluster using 2 different storage tiers and need to expand 1 specific storage tier.

We added drives to both servers, added to the specific storage tier sing powershell and they were correctly assigned. S2D automatically started a rebalance and successfuly finished hours later. Then we tried to expand the storage tier using the Resize-StorageTier powershell command and got a message saying there was no available space to perform that operation (even if I tried to add 100GB). We tried using Windows Admin Center, but we received the message "Error - The size is too large—try entering a smaller size" as displayed by the picture below.

Any advice?

    Hello,

This behavior may occur if the physical capacity added is not yet reflected as available logical space due to tier alignment or metadata overhead. Additionally, the Resize-StorageTier cmdlet may fail if the tier’s allocation boundaries are not properly updated post-rebalance.

    We recommend the following steps:

    1. Run Get-StorageTier and Get-StoragePool to confirm the actual available capacity and tier mapping.
    2. Use Optimize-StoragePool to ensure the pool metadata is refreshed.
    3. Try resizing in smaller increments (e.g., 10–20GB) to test allocation thresholds.
    4. Confirm that the drives added match the media type and resiliency settings of the target tier.
    5. Review cluster health via Get-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect for any latent warnings.

If my answer is useful for you, please vote for it.

    Best regards,
