After the update, the icons for all applications and files with Office extensions changed.

Yes, the new icons for the programs themselves look great, much prettier, in my opinion.

But the document extension files themselves look very unappealing when there are a lot of them on the desktop. It feels like a kind of noise and clutter in my head, perhaps because the images on a white background stand out so much from other programs/files/and documents. Additionally, the icons for Word and Excel documents have different heights, with one being taller and the other being thicker. It doesn't look very appealing.

Is there a way to change the appearance of the icons for just the extensions without third-party software?

    Hi,

Unfortunately, there’s no way to change Microsoft 365 file icons back to their previous design. I understand that some users may not prefer the new look, but these updated icons are part of Microsoft’s current design language and are applied system-wide through updates. You can, however, share your feedback about the new icons through the Feedback Hub app or the Feedback portal, so Microsoft can consider adding an option to customize.
