At the end of installing windows update KB5066793 (at 98%) the update rolls back and shows Error 0x800f0922 in windows update.

CBS.log shows the installation rolling back in "phase 31" with an error relating to registering the event channel for Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational.

I found that an incomplete registration existed for the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels\Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational. Because this channel it was listed in "wevtutil el" but wevtutil gp Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational /ge gave an error ("Failed to open metadata for publisher Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational. The system cannot find the file specified.") I emoved the "Operation" key from the registry and then rebooted and tried again. This did not help, same problem.

Running the windows update troubleshooter and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and did not solve the problem. The Windows Store application itstelf seems to work OK. I can check for updates and was able to install an update that append to be available in the store.

From the CBS.log:

Please open Regedit.exe and delete this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Publishers\{53e3d721-2aa0-4743-b2db-299d872b8e3d}

See if that resolves the issue.

    Hello Pieter van der Meulen,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. It's my pleasure to help you today.

I understand that you are struggling with Windows update. The error you see point to whether an issue with the .NET framework or corruption in the system files.

To fix the issue, please follow these steps:

    1. Run SFC scan
      • Type "Command Prompt" on the search bar and select "Run as administrator"
      • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
      • Restart your PC when it's done.
    2. Delete staged packages and clean up corrupted tasks
      • Type PowerShell on the search bar and select "Run as administrator"
      • Type these commands and press Enter after each:
      • Dism /english /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr /i "Staged"
      • Dism /online /remove-package /PackageName:Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~14393XXXX
      • Identify the GUID of SecurebootEcodeUEFI using this command.reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows\PI\SecureBootEncodeUEFI" /v ID
      • Delete the entry using these commands:
      • reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Maintenance{GUID}" /f
      • reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Plain{GUID}" /f
      • reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks{GUID}" /f
      • reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows\PI\SecureBootEncodeUEFI" /f Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.
      • Restart your PC and try again.
    3. Manually download the update. If the above steps cannot help. You can go to the Windows Update Catalog, find the KB, download it and install it manually.
