My OneDrive is saying there isn't enough free space even though I am well below my limit

If I hover over my OneDrive icon I get the message:

"OneDrive - Personal There isn't enough free space"

But I am well below my account limit 1TB.

According to my account I am using 13.7GB.

I have put files into my Personal vault which amount to around 200Gb. I'm not sure to what extent upload is complete on these.

    Hello ,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I understand that you are having issue with OneDrive. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

As your description, you get the message: "OneDrive - Personal There isn't enough free space". This issue usually happens because OneDrive checks both your cloud storage and your local disk space. Even if you have plenty of cloud storage (1TB), your PC might not have enough free space for syncing large files especially if your Personal Vault contains 200GB and is still uploading.

There are the 3 most likely causes and fixes:

    1. Check Local Disk Space

OneDrive needs temporary space to upload files and maintain sync.

    • Open File Explorer → This PC.
    • Check free space on your system drive (usually C:).
    • If it's low, free up space or move OneDrive folder to a larger drive:
    • Right-click OneDrive icon → Settings → Sync and backup → Location.
    1. Verify Personal Vault Upload Status

If files are still uploading, OneDrive reserves space for them.

    • Click OneDrive icon → View sync progress.
    • Check if uploads are pending or stuck.
    • If stuck, pause and resume sync or restart OneDrive.
    1. Check OneDrive Settings for “Files On-Demand”

If Files On-Demand is off, OneDrive tries to keep all files locally.

    • Right-click OneDrive icon → Settings → Sync and backup.
    • Enable Files On-Demand (Keep files online only).
    • This reduces local disk usage.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to let me know if you have any further update.

    Best Regards,
