I'm trying to get the sound working on our monitor but nothing I do is working.

I have tried as much as I could to figure out why no sound is being emitted from our monitor. I've tried messing with the general settings of the computer, the more in-depth settings from the control panel and successfully hooked up a pair of older speakers but still no sound from the monitor itself. I even looked up to see if our current monitor had built in speakers and it does but still nothing. No matter what I do, it doesn't seem to be working and I hope I can get some help to try and figure out as to how it can work.

Hello

Can you hold down win+R keys, type in mmsys.cpl and press enter, when launched, is the monitor listed? If it is, make sure it is not disabled - you can right click to enable it. And also make sure it is set as default device,

If the monitor is not listed, can you share with me two screenshots please?

Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters, I would like to see what's listed.
Please type msinfo32.exe in the search on the taskbar and hit enter, then share a screenshot of the pop up.

I also need to know -

You said you hooked up with old speakers - to where, to the computer or to the monitor? Do the speakers work?

What's the monitor's brand and model?

How do you connect the monitor, for example, HDMI to HDMI, Display port to display porty, any adapter/converter involved?

The speakers are connected to the to the computer itself and work when put as the primary. The monitor brand is a Dell SE2425HM, and the cords that are connected from monitor to computer are a VGA cable, HDMI cable and the power cable. Even when putting the monitor as the primary source of sound it still doesn't make any. I'm also not sure how to do a screenshot exactly but it's probably not hard to figure out so I will figure that out.

I did forget to mention that I use an adapter for the VGA cable to HDMI so it connects to the computer itself from the monitor.

Ok, that becomes clear, the issue is VGA port and the converter.

VGA port carries analog video-only signal, it doesn't support audio. Same goes to the converter. This monitor should have an HDMI port as I just checked, you want to use HDMI to HDMI direct connect. That should work.

I have unplugged the VGA cable from the computer and there is still no sound coming from the monitor, the regular HDMI cable is plugged in and I am still getting visual, is there a certain HDMI port that it would go into in order for both visual and audio to come from it? I'll try and switch it around to a different port but currently the monitor is not listed on the control panel sound page to put as the primary. Again, I'll switch the HDMI port around into the different slots to see if it'll work. Also, thank you for helping me with this, I'm not the most tech savvy person so it means a lot to learn from this.

The monitor is not showing up as an output for audio at all now even before I switched the HDMI cable to another available slot.

Actually Darin, I reviewed the detail data sheet of this monitor, it actually does NOT have audio capability. Well, that's disappointing but that solves the problem at least. I did research on it too but I guess I misunderstood what I read about the monitor. I'm very grateful for the help still.

I do think I have one last question though, I still would like to get a monitor sometime in the future with built in speakers that is still Dell brand and was wondering if you possibly had any recommendations for one.

When it comes to recommendation, it can be different from user to user due to preferences, and also the type of computer they are using.

Some things to consider -

Depends on the ports you have on the computer, I personally recommend making sure the monitor has at least one HDMI port and one display port. VGA is not important as very few computers these days have VGA port, unless you need your monitor to work with some legacy computers. Both HDMI and Display ports support audio and video.

Integrated speaker monitors typically cost more. You can see a list here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/computer-monitors/ar/8605/integrated-speaker?appliedRefinements=40625 Then on the left side, use the filter to filter your preferences, such as size, resolution, etc. Scroll down and you will find the connection type where you can select the ports it need to come with.
