SUBSEQUENT TO RENEWAL OF MY MICROSOFT365 SUBSCRIPTION, THE NEW OUTLOOK DO NOT SUPPORT TELSTRA IMAP AND MY TELSTRA @BIGPOND PASSWORD IS UNSUPPORTED. THE INCOMING SERVER IS 'OUTLOOK.OFFICE365.COM: 993 in stead of "IMAP.TELSTRA.COM. The outgoing mail server is correct at 'smtp.telstra.com'

I AM UNABLE TO FIND A PATHWAY TO CHANGE THIS. THE PATHWAY GIVEN ON THE NET "FILE > SETTINGS > ACCOUNT SETTINGS' do not exist on the new outlook and when I want to add the Telstra IMAP ACCOUNT there is an "OOPS" IN THE MICROSOFT365 RESPONSE

I REVERTED BACK TO THE OLD OUTLOOK VERSION AND ALL IS WORKING. ON MY IPHONE MY MAIL IS FUNCTIONING AS WELL AND SYNCHRONISES.

    Dear JACOBUS MALAN ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand that after renewing your Microsoft 365 subscription, the New Outlook for Mac does not support your Telstra Bigpond IMAP account, and you cannot change the incoming server settings.

Here are solutions, please kindly follow :

    1. Switch Back to Legacy Outlook for Mac

The common workaround is to revert to the old Outlook version, which supports manual IMAP setup.

Here are the steps to revert Outlook Mac to Legacy View:

    • Launch Outlook on your Macbook.
    • Move the mouse cursor to the dashboard of your mac. New options will visible.
    • Click on Help from the dashboard. A new popup menu will appear.
    • Select Reverse to Legacy Outlook.
    • User's image
    • Quit Outlook from your device.
    • Launch the Applications folder from the Mac.
    • Right-click on Microsoft Outlook and select move to the bin.
    • Launch Finder and type ~/Library/ in Go to the folder option.
    • User's image
    • Locate this service in the library; ~/Library/Application Support/com.microsoft.Outlook and delete it.
    • User's image
    • Open Safari or any web browser.
    • Search for filehorse in the browser and download Microsoft Office 2016 15.41
    • Install the application on your Mac.

    2. Use Correct Telstra IMAP/SMTP Settings
    Open Microsoft Outlook 2016

    • Go to the Info tab and select Account Settings
    • To create a new email setup, select New
    • Select ‘Manual setup or additional server types’ and then select Next
    • Select IMAP and then select Next
    • In User information enter your name and Telstra email address
    • In Log on information enter your Telstra email address and password
    • Untick the box ‘Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)’
    • Update the server information:
    • In Account type enter: IMAP
    • In Incoming mail server (IMAP) enter:  imap.telstra.com
    • In Outgoing mail server (SMTP) enter: smtp.telstra.com
    • In Mail to keep offline enter: User defined (all by default)
    • Select More Settings
    • Select Outgoing Server tab
    • Tick the box My outgoing server SMTP requires authentication
    • Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected
    • Select Advanced and under Server Port Numbers:
    • For Incoming server (IMAP) enter: 993
    • For ‘Use the following type of encrypted connection’ choose SSL in the drop down box
    • For Outgoing server (SMTP) enter: 465
    • For ‘Use the following type of encrypted connection’ choose SSL in the drop down box
    • Select Ok and then Next.
    • Microsoft Outlook will test your email settings. Once it’s done, select Close.
    • Select Finish. Your Telstra email address should now be added.

If you revert to Legacy Outlook or use another email client, configure your Bigpond account manually with these settings:

    • Incoming (IMAP): imap.telstra.com | Port: 993 | Encryption: SSL
    • Outgoing (SMTP): smtp.telstra.com | Port: 465 | Encryption: SSL
    • Username: Full Bigpond email address
    • Password: Your Telstra email password

    3. Generate an App-Specific Password

Some users report that Telstra now requires an app-specific password for third-party clients:

Generate App specific password by logging into Telstra/Bigpond Webmail

    • Login to Telstra Webmail on a Browser
    • Click on the nine-dots in the top left menu and select “Settings”
    • Click on “Accounts”
    • Look for “App Specific Passwords” and click “Generate Password” giving it a name such as “Outlook Password”
    • Make note or the very unfriendly computer generated password. We suggest using a copy and paste technique as the password will not have to be re-entered too often.
    • If you have any old Bigpond accounts in Outlook App (Program), remove them first.
    • Create new account in Outlook App (Program)
    • When prompted for a Password in Outlook, use the “App specific password” generated from Telstra Webmail (see above)
    • Once done click “Next” and if the passwords was added correctly, the account will be added to your Outlook App (Program)
    • Close Outlook and reopen Outlook for the new account to appear

    4. Alternative Options

    • Use Apple Mail or another IMAP-compatible client with the same Telstra settings.
