VPN Client downloaded from Azure portal won't connect to Azure VPN Gateway - Timeout
We have been using an Azure VPN Gateway without issue. Today we're getting an error when trying to connect:
A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (Error 0x8007274c).
We are using the VPN downloaded from the gateway, the certificate was refreshed a couple of months ago and we've had no issues with it up to today.
We have this message under resource health:

At Friday, October 24, 2025 at 2:44:56 AM GMT+1, the Azure monitoring system received the following information regarding your Virtual Network Gateway:
We are sorry, your gateway is in standby mode. During this time the gateway will not initiate or accept connections with on premises devices or other Azure gateways.
Recommended Steps
- Reset your Azure gateway
- Verify if there is a network security group (NSG) applied to the GatewaySubnet
- To get help recovering your gateway, contact support
I followed the instructions in the help section and tried resetting the gateway. That was reported as succeeding. We still couldn't connect.
Connections have been attempted from PCs at different locations so the issue is not local to the VPN clients.
Any help would be very much appreciated as we cannot perform daily BAU tasks whilst this is down.
