MySQL flexible server will not start.

My MySQL Flexible server will not start. It is in a stopped state/ This is the third instance of this issue happening in 4 weeks. In the two prior instances, the server started back up after a day. This issue is that with my server down, my team cannot log into the application.

It seems you are having trouble with your MySQL Flexible Server not starting up, and that this has happened a few times in the past month. That sounds frustrating, especially since it's impacting your team's ability to access the application.

1.Check the server status

Run the following in Azure CLI:

az mysql flexible-server show --resource-group <your-rg> --name <server-name>

If it’s stopped, try starting it:

az mysql flexible-server start --resource-group <your-rg> --name <server-name>

If it fails, note the full error message or request ID.

2.Check Activity Log:

Go to Monitor → Activity Log in the portal and filter for your server. Look for any maintenance or stop/start actions around the time it went down.

3.Verify maintenance or capacity issues:

Check if any planned maintenance or regional capacity issues are delaying startup. You can also review Azure Service Health for your region.

4.Review server logs:

In the portal, go to Monitoring → Server logs or use:

az mysql flexible-server server-logs list --resource-group <your-rg> --name <server-name>

Look for messages about crash recovery, storage limits, or corruption.

5.Restart the server:

If a normal start doesn’t work, try:

az mysql flexible-server restart --resource-group <your-rg> --name <server-name>

6.Prevent it from happening again:

Enable Self-Healing in the portal (if available).

Consider enabling High Availability (HA) to avoid downtime if this keeps repeating.

If it still doesn’t start, please share the error output, request ID, and recent logs this will help identify whether it’s a regional capacity issue or something internal, provide these details in private message section.

To better understand what's going on and help you fix this, could you please help me with a few more things?

1.When you try to start the server or check logs, what exact error messages and tracking IDs do you see? Getting those will really help me trace the problem.

2.Have you noticed if this usually happens after any maintenance, or at certain times? Any patterns could be a clue.

3.Have you checked Azure’s Diagnostic Logs or Azure Monitor for any warnings or errors recently?

4.Could you check if there are any active operations on the server that might be blocking it from starting? You can run this command in Azure CLI:

az resource list --resource-group <your-resource-group-name> --query "[?resourceType=='Microsoft.DBforMySQL/flexibleServers'].{Name:name, ProvisioningState:properties.provisioningState}"Just let me know what it returns.

5.Also, do you know if you have hit any resource limits like storage size or IOPS?

Here are some quick things you might want to try as well:

1.Try starting the server straight from the Azure Portal, sometimes it works better than the CLI.

2.If the server still won’t start, does trying a Point-in-Time Restore to a new server sound like something you’d want to explore?

3.Double-check if your MySQL version (5.7.44) and your SKU (Standard_B2ms) are correct in your setup.

4.And take a peek at Azure Service Health for any regional issues around East US.

Looking ahead, if this keeps happening, I would recommend turning on Self-Healing so the server tries to restart automatically when it goes down. Also enabling High Availability can really save the day by reducing downtime with a standby server. Thanks for sharing those details with me.
