Need to create Azure AI Foundry project in different RG

Hi Team,

We have a requirement from App team where we need to create a Azure AI Foundry account in one RG and Azure AI Foundry project in another RG by using the reference of an existing Azure OpenAI resource.

Could you please confirm if this can be achieved by any medium either using any Powershell or CLI script as from Azure portal we are not able to achieve this.

To create an Azure AI Foundry account in one Resource Group (RG) and an Azure AI Foundry project in another RG using the reference of an existing Azure OpenAI resource, you cannot currently achieve this via the Azure Portal. However, you can automate provisioning using scripts.

Recommended Approach:

Utilize Bicep templates or ARM templates (as per official documentation) to script the creation of both resources in different RGs.

Use Azure CLI or PowerShell to deploy resources across multiple RGs by specifying the resource group for each deployment.

Reference your existing Azure OpenAI resource in the template for the Foundry project. Make sure to set correct dependencies and resource IDs for cross-RG references.

We have checked the shared links however there is no process given for your 3rd point "Cross-RG deployment is supported via Azure CLI/PowerShell if your deployment scripts specify target RGs for each resource explicitly."

Could you please the steps or MS link to refer and perform this activity.

As checked the reference link shared by you, the scenario its explaining is when we already have a Azure AI Foundry project available and that we want to link with another AI Foundry account. However in our situation, we have one Azure OpenAI and Azure AI foundry account created using the Bicep template where both the resources are in same RG. Now the requirement is to use the AI Foundry account and to create a AI Foundry project in new RG and not in the RG where the AI Foundry account is located.

Please help us with the solution to perform the activity.

Hi Shubham,
A connection can only be made between the AI Foundry project and the AI Foundry resource from different resource groups, as shown below:

In your AI Foundry -> Select Management Center -> Select New Connection -> Select Azure AI Foundry -> Then select Add Connection, as shown below:

Whenever you create a project inside any AI Foundry, it will require a resource group name, as shown below. User's image

Currently, this are the only ways to connect and have a project from one resource group in another resource group's AI Foundry.
