We are currently using SQL virtual machine 2016 version standard edition the end of support is going to reach at July14, 2026. So, we are plaining to upgrade the SQL virtual machine to 2022 version. our Virtual machine size is Standard E8-4ads v5.

  1. We want to know is any changed is required in the Virtual machine size to going for next version 2022?
  2. we are using SSIS packages and ODBC connection to the oracle server from the our SQL server. During this upgrade will any impact will come on this ?

    Hi Dhanushkumar J,

Thanks, Erland for your engagement on this thread, Thank you Dhanushkumar J for reaching on Microsoft Q&A! Welcome!

If you are looking for SQL server 2016 -> SQL server 2022, here are few things you can check before upgrading, please make sure you have checked all the prerequisites

    1. Virtual Machine Size: The Standard E8-4ads v5 size is typically suitable for many SQL Server workloads, including SSIS packages. However, for an upgrade to SQL Server 2022, it’s a good idea to check the performance requirements and ensure that your VM's resources (CPU, memory, and IOPS) are adequate. You might not need a size change, but keep an eye on performance during and after the upgrade.
    2. Impact on SSIS Packages and ODBC Connections: Upgrading SQL Server should be mostly seamless for SSIS packages and ODBC connections, but there are a few considerations:
      • Compatibility Level: After the upgrade, check the compatibility level of your databases (you can run a script to verify this). This could affect how your SSIS packages run.
      • Testing: It would be wise to run a few tests on your packages and ODBC connections post-upgrade to ensure everything works as expected.
      • Backup: Always take backups before starting any upgrade to safeguard your data against unexpected issues.

Please refer these Microsoft documents and make sure
