Azure account enforced to MFA and notifications aren't received by my Authenticator app.

I've registered my personal microsoft account years ago with (for example) ******@gmail.com. I used the same email to sign up in Azure.

Yesterday, when I tried to sign in into Azure it popped up MFA codes to get approved in Authenticator app. I didn't know that Azure might enforce MFA to turn on without any prior notification and didn't have my Azure MFA account prepared.

However, I've got my Microsoft account created in Authenticator. But Azure login notification don't get sent into Microsoft account in my Authenticator app. Questions:

  1. Is it expected that Azure account has nothing to do with Microsoft account even though they've been created using the same gmail?
  2. Is there a way to make Azure notifications to be sent into Microsoft account of Authenticator?

NB: You guys need to add Azure AD B2C service into child tag listing. Haven't found it.

    hi Aidar Darmesh,

yes, it is expected. even though you used the same ******@gmail.com email address, they are two completely separate identities.

your personal microsoft account (what you use for outlook.com, xbox, etc.) is one identity.

your azure ad work or school account (created when you signed up for azure) is a different identity, even if it has the same-looking email address.

this is why the notifications from your azure login aren't appearing in the authenticator app where you have your personal microsoft account registered. the authenticator app is tied to your personal identity, but the mfa request is coming from your azure ad identity.

you need to register your azure ad account separately in the authenticator app.

on the azure login screen, when it prompts for mfa, look for a link that says "sign in another way" or "i can't use my authenticator app right now".

this should give you an option to set up a new authenticator app.

follow the prompts to scan a new qr code with the same authenticator app. this will add your azure ad account as a separate entry in the app.

after this, you will see two accounts in your authenticator app..... your personal microsoft account and your azure ad account. the mfa prompts for azure will now be sent to the correct entry.

so, to summarize. you need to add your azure ad account as a separate registration in the microsoft authenticator app. the "sign in another way" link on the login screen is your path to do this.

    regards,

    Alex
