How to get Teams Add-In working on Outlook for Mac

Hi - I've done quite a bit of searching but can't nail this.

I have Outlook for Mac Version 16.101.2 which is very recent. Latest version is 16.102.3

I have Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

I have downloaded the Teams desktop app to my Mac

I am running Mac OS Sequoia 15.6.1

I have seen info where it suggests you have to allow the add-in to be used in Teams Admin. I cannot see anywhere in Teams Settings where I can get to this. I have restarted Outlook and been to the Tools menu but there is no Add-Ins menu option there.

I'm a bit lost.....Teams seems to be included in my 365 subscription as I have it downloaded etc.

If it wasn't for the fact that clients want to have Team Meetings, I wouldn't even use Outlook as it's antiquated, but given I have to use Teams for meetings I've set up Outlook, JUST to use Teams. I prefer to use Apple Mail. Even at work, we're all still on the old Outlook interface as no one likes the new interface (we reverted back to the old interface) ... that is until we're forced into swapping to the new interface ... we're dreading the day.

I'm on "Legacy Outlook" which is a bit odd as I thought I bought the whole kit and kaboodle. Therefore it looks like we can't integrate Teams into Outlook. :(

Before we draw a conclusion, please help me check these two things to pinpoint where the problem lies:

Are you looking for the Teams Meeting button like the one in the image below?

Have you tried accessing Outlook on the Web (via a web browser)?
Is the Outlook application you are using on your Mac the New Outlook or the Legacy Outlook?

Based on some documents I have read shared in the community, the central issue here is the difference between account types. With a Microsoft 365 Family plan, you cannot schedule Teams meetings directly through the desktop Outlook software in the same way business/school accounts do.

The robust Teams Meeting integration (Add-in) in Outlook is typically reserved for Microsoft 365 business or education editions (accounts connected to an enterprise-level Exchange Online server). I apologize for this unnecessary complexity that Microsoft has created between the different subscription tiers.

Also, you don't need to worry about the Teams Admin Center or Admin Policies. These tools are only for administrators of subscription business or edu. It is completely normal for you not to have access to them with your personal subscription.

Hi Jeanie - ok, thanks. Yes, the goal was to create a Teams meeting via the desktop Outlook app. Seems this is not possible without plan change.

I did create a meeting in the teams desktop app as a test. I wasn't sure what to expect. I invited people including one of my other personal addresses. I did not get an invite sent to that address and I also did not get an appointment created in my Outlook calendar so I am really not sure what the experience is supposed to be. I can only assume other invitees did not get an invite. Addresses I invited are all external addresses. What should the experience be? All I could do based on above was duplicate a meeting invite in Outlook and paste in the Teams link which is pretty clumsy.

Aside from the fact that Teams Meeting integration (Add-in) in Outlook is typically reserved for Microsoft 365 Business or Education editions, I’d like to confirm your current issue:

You created a meeting in the Teams desktop app

Invited multiple people, including one of your personal email addresses

Did not receive an invite at that personal address and did not see the appointment appear in your Outlook calendar

Is that correct?

This situation seems related to lack of synchronization between Teams and Outlook, because normally when you create an event in one app (Teams or Outlook), it should appear in the calendar of the other app.

To check further, please try the following:

Open a browser and go to https://outlook.live.com

Create a new event and invite your other personal email address

Verify:

Does the event show up in your Teams calendar?

Does your personal email receive the invitation?

Also, when you open Outlook on the web, do you see the Teams Meeting button? If this button does not appear in the desktop app, that’s due to your subscription type. However, when you create a new event, it should still sync between Outlook and Teams, and invitees should receive the invitation.

Please kindly help me try the steps above and let me know the results so we can determine if the app is experiencing any additional issues.

Logged into outlook live

I get the option to use the Teams meeting toggle in the invite

I can see the invite in my online calendar and in my Teams desktop app

I did not get an email invite to my other personal email that was used on the live invite

I do not see any appointment in my Outlook desktop calendar

This whole string started because I want a simple way to create a Teams meeting from my desktop Outlook. If there is no way to do this other than update my subscription then I will just leave it. Happy to hear any other ideas you have. Thanks

Thank you for your quick response! I truly appreciate it.

Regarding “I did not get an email invite to my other personal email that was used on the live invite”: Could you please check your Junk/Spam folder or try searching for keywords related to the meeting title you created? In my own test, the invite email ended up in my Spam folder, so it’s worth checking.

Regarding “I do not see any appointment in my Outlook desktop calendar”: Would you be able to try uninstalling and reinstalling the Outlook desktop app? After redownloading, let’s see if anything changes.

Currently, the only guaranteed solution is to upgrade to a Microsoft 365 Business plan. I’m truly sorry for this limitation and appreciate your understanding. I’ll continue to look into this, and if I find any alternative ideas, I’ll share them right away. I also hope other users will join the discussion and share their own workarounds, maybe together we’ll discover something helpful.
