There is an issue with a newly released feature in Intune regarding the blocking of writing tools, including Genmoji, in Microsoft Word on iOS devices.

Problem Description:

The Intune App Protection Policy (APP) was configured to block writing tools for a group of users and various apps. While this setting works correctly in other Microsoft applications such as Teams and OneNote, it does not seem to have the same effect in Microsoft Word on iOS devices, where users can still access and utilize these features.

Configuration Summary:

  • Policy Type: Intune App Protection Policy (iOS/iPadOS)
  • Target Apps: Almost all available applications
  • Settings:
    • Writing tools: Blocked
      • Genmoji: Blocked
        • Screencapture: Allow
        • Result: The block functions as intended in other apps but fails specifically in Microsoft Word.

Is this a known issue with the iOS version of Word, or could there be a configuration detail that has been overlooked? Any insights or workarounds would be highly appreciated!

    Hi Lokesh K,

MAM policies apply only to work data and do not affect personal data. Thing to note here is that:

New files are personal by default. Documents created inside the app remain personal until you save them to a corporate location.

    • MAM protections apply after saving to corporate locations such as OneDrive, Sharepoint. Restrictions take effect only once the file is saved to a managed location such as OneDrive for Business or SharePoint.

If you see that the restrictions aren't applied even after saving the file, feel free to open a Support case or let me know more details - i'd be happy to help further!
