Hi Akwasi senyah,
Please check what kind of key you have. Not all Windows keys are equal. Run this in Command Prompt (Admin):
slmgr /dli
This shows whether your current install expects:
OEM key → tied to the original device.
Retail key → can move between PCs.
Volume (MAK/KMS) key → requires enterprise activation server.
If your key type doesn’t match your current Windows install, activation will fail.
For example: a Windows 10 Home key cannot activate Windows 10 Pro.
Verify edition compatibility:
A Windows 10 Pro key cannot activate Windows 10 Home, and vice versa.
Check your edition in Settings → System → About → Windows Specifications.
If mismatched, you need to reinstall the correct edition or change the product key to upgrade/downgrade.
If it’s a Volume license key:
If your keys are Volume MAK/KMS, you cannot activate directly over the internet like a retail key.
KMS requires your organization’s KMS server.
MAK should work online but may have hit its activation limit. To check MAK remaining activations, only Microsoft’s Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) or your reseller can confirm — the old PID Checker tool is deprecated.
