workstations are not able to access server. Message is failed to generate user instance due to local application data path

Why are we getting this error from workstaions. The database and software both work on the server without issue.

Does the workstations require a mapped drive? We are using the actual name of the server and the related SQL server for pathing. That works fine on the server but the error prevents us from getting the workstations on line.
