Hello @ Feehan, Andrew,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & hope you are doing well.
I understand your questions about the Upgrade to Standard SKU public IP addresses in Azure by 30 September 2025, Basic SKU will be retired.
A public IP enables external users or systems outside of Azure to access resources you have running in the cloud. For instance, it can be used for:
- A virtual machine (VM) that you access remotely.
- A VPN gateway to ensure secure connections.
- A load balancer or Application Gateways that distribute traffic to backend services.
- Azure Firewalls
If you no longer use those services, the IPs may not be necessary.
To check if you still need your public IPs, review each one in the Azure portal to see what it’s connected to. If a public IP isn’t associated with any resource, you can safely delete it without impacting your environment.
If the IP is being used (such as by a firewall, VPN gateway, or virtual machine), you will need to upgrade it. Microsoft is retiring Basic public IP addresses on September 30, 2025, so after that date, they’ll stop functioning unless upgraded to Standard. Standard IPs offer enhanced security, reliability, and are supported by more Azure services. Please review your four public IPs, remove any that aren’t needed, and plan to upgrade the ones in use before the deadline.
You can follow Microsoft’s step-by-step guide to upgrade from Basic to Standard.
