When I am trying to add an automation account runbook to an ASR site recovery plan it is just hanging. I have the automation account created with a managed identity. Please can I geta support engineer to contact me and look at this via a screenshare.

As per query, you are experiencing a problem were adding an Azure Automation Account runbook to an Azure Site Recovery (ASR) recovery plan causes the process to hang indefinitely. You have already created the Automation Account with a managed identity, but the issue persists.

ASR recovery plans support integrating automation runbooks for custom failover actions. Common failure caused by the Automation Account’s identity or permissions aren’t set up correctly, or the portal UI is stuck due to backend validation failing silently. this results the portal appears frozen at confirmation.

To resolve this, please verify the following points on your end:

Verify the permission: The Automation Account’s managed identity must have the right RBAC role (e.g., Site Recovery Contributor or Contributor) on the Recovery Services Vault (or the subscription/resource group). If not, validation fails without error. Verify your managed identity role assignment:

# Get automation account identity principalId az automation account show -g <rg> -n <automationName> --query identity.principalId -o tsv # Check if it has ASR-related roles az role assignment list --assignee <principalId> --all

If you do not have a relevant role, assign one (example: Site Recovery Contributor on vault scope):

az role assignment create \ --assignee <principalId/ObjectID> \ --role "Site Recovery Contributor" \ --scope /subscriptions/<subscriptionId>/resourceGroups/<resourceGroupName>/providers/Microsoft.RecoveryServices/vaults/<vaultName>

Runbook not published: Only Published runbooks can be linked. If your runbook is still in draft, it won’t work. To Check runbook state

Go to your Automation Account

Select the Runbooks

Make sure the runbook is Published.

If the runbook depends on modules not imported into the Automation Account, ASR integration may fail. Ensure If that runbook references any PowerShell modules (like Az.Accounts, Az.OperationalInsights, or custom modules), those modules must be explicitly imported into the Automation Account.

Verify the Resource: The Automation Account must be in the same subscription and region as the Recovery Services Vault.

In most cases assigning the valid permission "Site Recovery Contributor "role to the Automation Account’s managed identity at the vault scope fixes the issue. If permissions are fine but portal still you are facing the same issue, please let us know.

Hi there,

Yes the automation account managed identity has the correct RBAC role on the RSV and the runbook is not in edit mode, it is published. The automation account and rsv are in the same sub and region.

When I seelct the automation account and then runbook as a pre action in the ASR plan and click OK, nothing happens

I had this exact same issue and using the ReactViewblades URL worked for me to add Runbook to Recovery Plan. This was in Azure Government portal and just changed the mentioned URL to .us instead of .com. Thanks.
