Uploading a ADT model in ADT Explorer does not alter the ADT instance

Could you please provide the details that is your model DTDL v2 or DTDL v3.
Currently, Azure Digital Twins Explorer fully supports DTDL v2 models and supports limited functionality for DTDL v3 models.
DTDL v3 models can be viewed in the Models panel, and twins created with DTDL v3 models can be viewed and edited (including twins with array properties). However, DTDL v3 models don't show up in the Model Graph panel, and they can't be imported using Azure Digital Twins Explorer. To import DTDL v3 models to your instance, use another developer interface like the APIs and SDKs or the Azure CLI.

welcome to this moderated Azure community forum.
It seems you are working with Version 3 DTDL models and that the authentication/authorisation of that portal is set up correctly with the right account and role assignment.
The Azure Digital Twins Portal only supports Version 2 models via the UI.
You need to use code to work with V3 models as seen in this blog post with examples.

Yes, versioning is an important part of Azure Digital Twins.
You cannot simply overwrite a model version.
Hi everyone, thank you for the support. It appears that I can only upload the DTDL json file successfully if I first delete the old model. I am not using versioning so I suspect that is by design, though it would be nice if ADT Explorer actually raise an error if it wans't applying the model. :)
