I have a key. My office 2016 did an update and stopped working. Tried to repair, didn't work. I uninstalled. Now I need to reinstall. If I sign in to my account, it tells me the key is already used. Duh! It was activated on the machine I just uninstalled it from.

Hi Phillip. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    Reinstall Office from here: https://products.office.com/en-us/download-back...

It may require reactivation via phone to confirm it's only installed on the one device.

If problems contact Office Support here: https://support.office.com/home/contact

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Philip, you need to deactivate your previous Installation and then re-install Office 2016

Go to https://office.com/myaccount and sign in using your Microsoft account, if prompted

    Select Install

Under Install information, locate that PC which Office was installed on

Select Deactivate Install to deactivate the Office installation

Then, click Install to install Office

You don't require a product key for MS Office if you have installed and activated it. You require it just once, for the first time installation and activation.

Once you install MS Office 365 / 2016 through Microsoft site and activate it, a digital signature corresponding to your computer gets stored in Microsoft servers.

Now whenever you login to your Microsoft account, it will check whether you are trying to install on the same computer or not. It won't ask for the product key again.

Hence, go ahead and reinstall. Follow the Help below to reinstall -

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Downlo...

In case, you want to install on a different computer, you will have to first deactivate Office license which was installed on old computer otherwise it will be counted as a license. Hence, if you were allowed installation on one computer, you will not be able to activate on new computer. If your license was for say 5 computer as in case of Office 365 Home, now your validity will be for 4 computers.

Hence, deactivate first and then install and activate.

Deactivate your existing installation - https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Deacti...

From any computer, go to your Microsoft account, Installs page and sign in using your Microsoft account, if prompted.

    https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/i...

Under PC/Mac installs used, locate the computer where you want to deactivate Office 365.

Select Deactivate to deactivate Office 365 on the PC or Mac.

    Reinstall Office

Step 1 - Sign in to download Office

Go to http://www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.

Sign in with the account you associated with this version of Office. This account can be a Microsoft account, or work or school account.

Forgot your account details? See I forgot the account I use with Office.

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/i-forg...

On the Office home page, do the following depending on your version of Office.

If you signed in with a Microsoft account, from the Office home page select Install Office > Install. (Office 365 subscribers should select Install again).

This begins the download of Office. Follow the prompts on your screen to complete the install.
