Deleted is meant for just that, some mail providers auto delete that folder content after xx days

Using an old win version means there are no security updates and you would be wide open to infections

    Hi JimSha44:

I retired my Vista SP2 computer a few years ago and no longer use the built-in Windows Mail program on that computer, but here are a few things you should check.

If your emails are disappearing after they are read be sure that Show All Messages is selected in the top-right corner. It's very easy to accidentally change this setting so that messages are hidden after they are read.

If that doesn't solve your problem be sure to check the Advanced settings for your email account (go to Tools | Accounts | Mail and then double-click the account name to view/edit the settings). I had the account for my free Microsoft Outlook.com email account (email address <myusername>@live.com) configured to leave a copy of the email on the Outlook.com server after it had been uploaded to the local Windows Mail program on my computer, and to delete my emails from the Outlook.com server if I deleted them in my local Windows Mail program.

The standard TCP ports for most email servers are Port 25 for SMTP (outgoing) and Port 110 for POP3 (incoming) messages but the image below also shows that I preferred to use the secure SSL/TLS Port 587 for SMTP-S and Port 995 for POP3-S for that email account so that communications between my computer and the Microsoft Outlook.com email server were encrypted. See my 01-Nov-2018 in DIPAKMODHA's Windows Live Mail 2011 Vista Cannot Create an Email for further details.

If none of this helps then log in to the webmail program for your email provider from your browser (e.g., at https://login.live.com/login.srf if you have a free Outlook.com email account from Microsoft) to see if the messages you read in Windows Mail are still located on the server.
